the elements

"Attuning and working with these engeries in magic not only lends you the power to affect dramatic changes in your life, it also allows you to sense your own place in the larger scheme of Nature." --Scott Cunningham, Earth Power

The Elements play an enormous role in the natural magick that most wiccans use.  Earth, Air, Fire, Water.  The fifth and final element is SPIRIT, but will not be discussed within these pages as this is one of the subjects that must be taught, felt and empowered through one-on-one contact with one's Mentor.

The four other elements are also more than mere physical elements, more than what we see and feel, they are symbolic of both physical, spiritual and emotional attributes. Take the time to contemplate them.

What does Earth mean to you personally? Then what about Water, Fire, and Air?  If you can reflect and meditate on these elements by "Pathworking", firstly in their physical form, then delving deeper into your Altered State and Travels to see what spiritual and emotional aspects you attribute to them.

All of the elements definitely have certain characteristics, and perhaps they will have a deeper meaning to you once you've explored your insights and feelings concerning them by journeys into the Otherworld and by Pathworking.

"Perception is the key to reality"

I've listed out some of the various characteristics for you all already in these tables below.  These will give a brief outline to help you get started and will enable you to check if your Pathworking travels and revelations are on the right road to coin a phrase.  Take your time and don't only read the elements and characteristics, but "feel" them as you contemplate them in a slow read.

In ancient times, the pentacle was revered as a symbol of life - the four classical elements of earth, air, fire and water, join with spirit to create life.  Wearing the pentagram was and still is viewed as protection and as a talisman of divine life and good health.  The elements are represented by the Craft's Working Tools within the Circle.

The pentagram, in various forms, also represents the Three Degrees of Wiccan Witchcraft.  When the spirit point is down in the second degree, it signifies that the adherent is still ruled by the elements and the spirit still has to undergo more training.  By the time the Witch reaches the third degree, where the spirit point is upturned, the adherent has successfully overcome the elements and his or her spirit rules over them.
